Drawing from his musical beginnings singing, playing piano and drums, Hookdiggy takes hip-hop back to its core – thoughtful, upbeat lyrics driven by steady, danceable rhythms. He got into hip hop after his encounter with celebrated hip-hop group The Dayton Family, who are from his hometown of Flint, MI. He remembers hanging out in a club parking lot when one of the members of the Dayton Family pulled up and began bumping a track called “Dope Dayton Ave,” which completely gathered the attention of everyone in the parking lot. Then to make the experience more surreal, the rear hatch door of the caravan they were in opened up, and Matt “Backstabba” Hinkle started passing out copies of the Dope Dayton Ave EP. It was this experience that made Hookdiggy realize that becoming an artist that creates music to make people feel good was a true possibility. He seen artists from his city create their own sound and press it up into an album.
His newest song “School Crush” is reminiscent of old school rap, hip hop, and R&B of the 90’s, taking us back to the sounds of Tupac, DJ Quik, and Will Smith. It’s an endearing song about the way you felt with that first crush you had in school and taking that same energy with speaking to the girl he’s pursuing to see if she’s willing to make his School Crush dreams come true. “School Crush” is a fun type of hip hop love song with a catchy chorus and an upbeat danceable vibe.
Hookdiggy’s goal is to create music that will not only appeal to fans of the genre, but fans who love music in general, who love lyrical and creative content that makes you dance a little bit. Hookdiggy makes us realize that hip hop is more than just a genre, but a shared experience. He uses music to create a joy and a passion for music and hopes to inspire the musicians coming up. Nowadays, Hookdiggy is performing weekly on his This Is Hip-Hop Thursdays platform, releasing new singles, and in 2021 plans to do an EP collaborating with his drummer J Spence as he is focused on the plan to “give those who are committed to the craft the opportunity to make a living doing what they love – making good music”.
