Interview with Cha:dy

Growing up in France, Cha:dy started a girl band with her high school classmates, performing in various Paris venues. Moving to London in 2015 to focus on her solo career, she studied at the prestigious BIMM – launchpad of artists Tom Odell, The Kooks, James Bay and many more.

Cha:dy takes her cues from the silky production of acts such as NAO, Janelle Monae and M.I.A, incorporating elements of jazz, pop and soul, while still deeply inspired by household names like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. Drawing from her combined influences, she thrives on the ability to experiment with her music, transcending genres and wearing her heart on her sleeve. Combined with her sultry yet gritty vocals, Cha:dy totally owns her own brand of bold and gutsy alt-jazz/pop; she is a true force to be reckoned with.

Who inspired you to make music?

Music has always been a big part of my life, but when I heard Amy Winehouse for the first time and saw the incredible success she had with her songs, it showed me that you don’t have to be one kind of pop star to be popular. If you make great music, whatever the genre, people will want to listen to it.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

In a very positive way for us independent artists. We do not need to go through labels or such to release music, find our fans, and the fact that you can reach people from all over the world is wonderful. Although now with streaming being the main way we consume music, I have to admit that I miss going to record stores, browsing and being attracted by the artwork of the CD. Finding that little book with lyrics, photos, letters written by the artists – that was so cool!

Have you got a ritual of sorts when writing and thinking about your music?

The only ritual I have is that I like writing on paper, I don’t why, something feels different and I have 2 little lyric notebooks in which I write all my songs. I always carry on with me one of these notebooks, in case I get inspired and wanna write on the tube.

How would you describe your music?

It’s a mix of alt- r&b and moody pop with Caribbean flavors and neo-soul

What’s next for you?

I’m releasing the music video for my song Pink Lemonade! Looking forward to sharing this one. More gigs to come and hopefully some festivals too… I am currently working on the next project which might be an album so I’m super excited about that.

What are your top two favorite songs of all time? Why those songs?

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, is just the best song of all time, in my opinion, the hook, the lyrics, the chord progression, remind me of some fun times from my childhood!

What was the last TV series you watched on TV?

I actually do not remember haha, but I would say probably Grey’s Anatomy, it’s so depressing sometimes but so good.

What do you think the greatest invention has been?

Well, actually it hasn’t been invented yet, the teleporting machine. I don’t know what NASA is doing, but they need to get on that ASAP haha!

Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?

Yes, my rings, with semi-precious stones, they bring me peace, good energy… I wear them every day.

If you could ask your future self one question, what would it be?

Are you happy? Hoping the answer would be yes, very much!

If you had to describe yourself as a flavor, what would it be?

Spicy satay or Ben & Jerrys vanilla brownie chunks, cookie swirls and hazelnuts haha!
