Interview with Patrick Holland

Montreal-based artist, producer, engineer and remixer Patrick Holland is primarily known for his electronic releases under aliases such as Project Pablo and Jump Source, as well as his production and remix work for artists such as TOPS, Cut Copy, Jacques Greene, Homeshake, and more.

Now with his forthcoming record entitled “You’re The Boss” out on July 29th, Patrick Holland is re-introducing himself and making his first foray into guitar-driven indie pop.

Who inspired you to make music?

Friends inspire me the most. When recording You’re The Boss, my friend Adam Byczkowski, aka Better Person, was living above my studio. While recording the initial sketches he motivated me to sing, and continue down the path of writing songs. Having that extra bit of encouragement and critical feedback made a huge impact on the record overall.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

I wouldn’t be able to do what I do today without the web, as an independent. I’ve benefited in many ways as an artist – widespread communication, self publishing, direct to distribution, etc. – but I understand it’s left us all more vulnerable to the clutches of the big dogs up top. It sucks, and there’s gotta be another way. I’m optimistic though – things change so quickly, and learning to keep up with the tech is a part of the experience. Let’s just hope music can become more decentralized, and out of those greedy mits.

Have you got a ritual of sorts when making music?

I walk 40 minutes to and from my studio each day, which starts/finishes the process nicely. Laying flat on the floor while writing lyrics and listening back to mixes also helps. Attempting to break habits is something I tend to aspire to when in the moment.

Melodic and chunky

What’s next for you?

I’m about to tour Europe playing bass in my favorite band TOPS.

What are your top two favorite songs of all time? Why those songs?

Mica Levi’s “Love”, because it’s the pinnacle of being simple yet heavy.

Flo & Eddie’s “Keep it Warm”, because it’s very fun but so dark.
