Divine Magazine is pleased to bring you an interview with Reeny Smith

Singer, songwriter, and producer Reeny trades in a sophisticated blend of groove-heavy R&B and heart-wrenching soul, deeply influenced by both her Baptist church choir roots and the ‘90s girl groups she grew up listening to on the radio.

Since releasing her first EP in 2015, Reeny’s powerful voice and vibrant, emotional rollercoaster of a stage show have solidified her as one of the most enthralling artists in Canada.

Who are your top two favourite artists of all time? Why those artists?

My top two favourite artists of all time are Beyonce and Alicia Keys. My love for the “Queen B” began with Destiny’s Child, she was my favourite member of the group and the love carried over when she began her solo journey. Alicia Keys was a huge inspiration for me. Watch her perform, I saw someone who shared the two things I loved, Piano and singing. I’ve been obsessed ever since….

Have you always been interested in music? Was there a particular song/performance that made you say &” Woah! I want to do that?

I grew up in an extremely musical family so the interest in music was there from a young age. In my three years of High school, I participated in the school musicals and had the lead role in my last year. I think these experiences gave me that “Woah!!! I want to do that experience”.

If we were to look at the artists you are listening to, who would be on your playlist?

Artists who are currently on my playlist would be Victoria Monet, Ari Lennox, Seven Streeter, Ogi, Beyonce, Tank, Tink, Doechii, to name a few.

What would you be doing right now if it weren’t for your music career?

If I wasn’t doing music, I’d probably be pursuing something in the tech sector. Technology fascinates me and I love that I can combine that with music.

If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?

If I could open a show for any artist, it would be Alicia Keys. I feel we are so similar in so many a way, from genre, to vocals, to piano. It would be the perfect fit for me.

What is the most useless talent you have?

My most useless talent is that I can burp on command.

What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?

My Ideal meal for date night would be lemon pepper wings with honey mustard dipping sauce, sweet potato fries, Fresca to wash it down, and chocolate brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce!

If you could ask your future self one question, what would it be?

If I could ask my future self one question it would be “how much money is in our bank account right now?”

What’s your favourite board game?

My favourite board game is “Trouble”

If you could learn any language fluently, what would it be?

If I could learn any language fluently it would be French.
