Emerging Swedish pop sensation Be The Bear returns with a vibrant and sparkling new single titled “Mermaid.” Christina Wehage, the powerhouse behind the Be The Bear project, is an artist, producer & the owner of Gothenburg-based record label Loud Attic Records. She’s a true triple threat who marches to the beat of her own musical drum, blending elements of indie-rock, electro-pop, and electronica to create a sound that is entirely her own.

“Mermaid” is a powerful single both lyrically and musically. Christina originally wrote the song for a friend who was going through a dark time but it’s really a love song to anyone who struggles with mental illness. It’s a sonic representation of a loving hug; it’s a friendly offering of support. By releasing during Mental Health Awareness month, Christina hopes that her new single will help to erase the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Christina explains that the titled “Mermaid” comes from “the imagery from H.C. Andersen’s Danish folktale, the original Little Mermaid. Did you know, in the original story she sacrificed herself for love, and ended up becoming a whisper on the wind? Mermaids don’t have eternal souls, but she finds out how she can acquire one, and spends 300 years doing good deeds with other ‘Daughters of the Air.’”

The alias Be The Bear derives from Wehage’s childhood fear of bears and recurring cold-sweat nightmares. Christina adopted the totem of the wild bear, creating a powerful musical persona for herself. To date she has released three singles – “Erupt,” “Ruler,” and “I Don’t Want To” – and each song demonstrates Christina’s genre fluidity and keen musicality. Mixing a bubbly yet clever pop sensibility with an avant-garde persona reminiscent of Bjork and AURORA, Be The Bear is emerging as the next big thing to come out of Scandinavia.

“Between the soothing sounds and the comforting words, “Mermaid” will thoroughly warm your heart.”
