Alternative rock outfit Alex Cherney & The Brothers Nylon are back with a bold announcement: their fourth full-length album, Magnetized, is set to drop on July 10. To kick off the rollout, the band has released the lead single, “Good Life Crisis,” accompanied by a brand-new music video.

The “Emotional Conclusion”

Though it’s the first taste of the new record, “Good Life Crisis” was actually the final song written for the project. The band describes it as the album’s emotional anchor—a track that explores the strange restlessness that hits even when you have everything you thought you wanted.

“It’s about questioning whether that restlessness is growth or just something we’re wired to chase,” the band shares. “We really leaned into the ’90s sound with flanged vocals, a pinging snare, and chorused guitars”.

A Raw, ’90s Shift

While the band is known for their vintage analog aesthetic and previous ventures into reggae, soul, and disco, Magnetized marks a pivot toward a nostalgic ’90s alternative sound.

The Influence: Drawing from the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, and Blind Melon.
The Texture: Recorded primarily analog to tape on a Tascam 388, giving the tracks a warm, lived-in feel.
The Polish: Mixed by acclaimed engineer Ben Etter (Deerhunter, Washed Out), ensuring an emotionally grounded and cohesive experience.

The Road to ‘Magnetized’

With over 30 million streams and a reputation for genre-blurring songwriting, Alex Cherney describes this album as his most personal work to date, touching on life, death, and the quiet joys of the everyday. Fans can look forward to a five-single campaign featuring live studio performances and exclusive short-form content leading up to the July release.

How would you define your unique musical style?

We think of our music as one core voice that keeps getting reframed. Every project takes the same instincts we naturally write with and drops them into a different genre, era, or world. Instead of changing who we are, we like seeing how our sound behaves in a new environment. Sometimes that means moving through decades, sometimes it means chasing something completely unfamiliar, but the thread is always us.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone breaking into the industry today?

Lead with a DIY mentality and don’t wait for permission. Focus on making recordings you genuinely believe in and work with collaborators whose sound you admire. We believe consistency matters more than perfection. Putting out singles regularly helps you learn faster and also works in your favor on platforms like Spotify, where steady releases keep you active in the algorithm and help new listeners find you. Don’t overthink it. Let the music feel organic, because the imperfections are often what give a recording its character.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Probably less AI music. Not because technology itself is bad, but because music has always been about human perspective. The imperfections, the limitations, the strange decisions people make are what give songs identity. When everything becomes optimized or generated to sound ‘right,’ you start losing the sense that there’s a real person behind it. Discovery starts to feel flattened. I think technology should help artists make more personal work, not replace the human risk that makes music memorable in the first place.

Do you have any upcoming releases, videos, or shows fans should know about?

Our new album Magnetized comes out this July, with a run of singles starting this month. The record pulls heavily from 90s alternative music and the carefree energy of that era. It’s a project that leans into big guitars, melody, and a more loose, lived-in feeling compared to some of our past work, and we’re excited for people to hear how that influence shaped the sound.

Do you enjoy the technical side of recording and producing music?

Very much so. The technical side is integral to how we write songs. Each of our albums has been made differently, from remote recording to fully written sessions to songs taking shape in the moment inside the studio. We’re studio junkies and really treat the recording process like another member of the band. The gear, the room, and the experimentation all end up shaping the music as much as the performances do.
