London’s indie singer-songwriter Ananya released her newest introspective single, “Man Ray,” a track reflecting the aftermath of a relationship’s end where one desperately wants to see the good in another person. This song is a must hear for any of the sad pop girlies who still have that one person that that can’t seem to forget about.

Named after the fashion designer and surreal contemporary artist Man Ray, the track is reminiscent of a cropped photograph of the artist’s Glass Tears. The famed photograph captures a near-movie still: a woman cries painfully while looking upward at an unknown figure. Man Ray created the piece not long after a relationship’s end with his assistant and confidant Lee Miller, as a way of forming subtle reminders to her of his presence and unveiling his pain in an artistic medium. Similarly, Ananya’s latest addition to her discography melts in a sense of nostalgia and longing, despite the pain of what a past relationship can bring when unfurled and placed in open view. The track reflects as an indestructible object of a love that once was, permanently etching the relationship into musical memory.

“It’s about love that was imperfect but real, and the way certain connections keep pulling at you, even when you’ve walked away. The way joy and heartbreak can live side by side, and how some love leaves a mark you can’t forget.” – Ananya

Written alongside her producer, Ian Barter, “Man Ray” explores a more cinematic and nostalgic sound while organically experimenting with atmospheric-synth soundscapes. Sonically, the track leans heavily into an indie-pop influence, taking previous notes from her singles, “Falling” and “Long Jump.” Stream “Man Ray” below and follow Ananya @ananyamakesmusic on Instagram and TikTok, and visit her website ananyamakesmusic.com.
