Vancouver music scene veteran and bass player for The Zolas, dwi has just released his debut album Mild Fantasy Violence on Light Organ Records. Mild Fantasy Violence is a record about feeling disconnected from the normalities of relationships and society. “It’s about using extremes of both escapism and deep self reflection to come to terms with everyday life,” says dwi.

The album takes the listener through a musical journey where dwi brings together sadness and joy, explosions of love and fear, and warnings of the darkness of addiction and the struggle of supporting the ones you love. Fans of Mac DeMarco, Thom Yorke and Real Estate will jump on dwi’s open vocals, chill synth sounds, and rolling delicate grooves. The songs are personal yet familiar, soothing to the ear, and full of dark hope. dwi has received international airplay and favorable press from music critics in The Province, Georgia Straight, as well as internationally in theUK’s Joyzine andNL’s Music Zine, among others.

dwi’s deeply personal solo project was born out of the isolation that ensued as a result of the 2020 global pandemic, something we can all relate to. About his song, Good Friend, dwi says, “It’s about discovering that a friend had been struggling with something dark and wishing you knew more at the time so you could help them through it.” This catchy and relatable track is new, sensitive and introspective – it’s an emotive and thoughtful ode to friendship. The energy and harmony in this track lifts you up and brings you to a good place.

The breezy songs featured on Mild Fantasy Violence are reflective in nature, and touch on childhood, climate grief, addiction, and the political landscape of the world. Obvious nods to musical heroes such as The Beatles, Damon Albarn, and The Cure are heard throughout. At once dreamy and sentimental, moody and sensual, dwi’s magical and unfussy debut album will put a smile on your face and your finger on the repeat button.
