Tacoma, Washington, songwriter Kye Alfred Hillig is back with his ninth solo album, The All-Night Costume Company, released on March 4, 2026. This record represents a vital “arrival” born not from momentum but from the urgent necessity of staying alive.

After nearly walking away from music following his 2022 double album, Hillig found that silence only deepened his personal struggles. It was a sold-out show in Tacoma that November that snapped everything back into place, leading his band to demand the record that he eventually realized he needed to survive.

A Collective Force

While Hillig’s name is on the cover, he views this project as a product of his “church”—his band. They are a collective force that provided the pressure and space he needed to finish the work he almost abandoned:

  • David Bilbrey: Guitar
  • Bill Nordwall: Keyboards
  • Yoswa: Bass
  • Jasen Samford: Drums & Multi-instrumentals
  • Annie J: Backing Vocals

The Sound: Blue-Collar Grit Meets Indie Tension

Recorded at Ex Ex Studios in Seattle and produced by Johnny Nails, the album preserves a raw, “first-take” energy. The production avoids excessive polish, favoring Hammond organ swells, restrained guitars, and Hillig’s weathered, earnest voice.

The record sits in a unique sonic space:

  • The Roots: It carries the narrative patience of Bob Dylan and the human, blue-collar directness of Springsteen.
  • The Pulse: Fans of The Jayhawks or early Wilco will recognize the melodic lift and emotional tension.
  • Modern Echoes: Lyrically, Hillig shares a sharp, self-aware DNA with contemporary writers like Kevin Morby, MJ Lenderman, and Father John Misty.

Facing the Hard Truths

Hillig’s songwriting refuses to “soften the blow,” opting for clarity over easy closure.

  • “Ezekiel Bobbing For Apples”: The lead single explores modern loneliness and the risk of vulnerability.
  • “Our Remaining Pig”: A stark metaphor for growth, acknowledging that “no one benefits from avoiding the suffering that comes with growth.”

This isn’t a redemption arc; it’s a document of a calling that was never optional.
