Grunge and punk-rock band, Livia and the Rosebuds, goes big when it comes to their music. Their lyrics are symbolically large and their melodies grip you with their up-beat pace and strong instrumentation. Telling a personal story through music, Livia Rose Overton, the band’s lead singer who co writes with bassist/guitarist Landon Moore, bares her soul and journey with addiction in her music. Their latest release, “Close to Perfect,” was written about Livia’s time in rehab.
“I wrote close to perfect while I was out in rehab in California,” shares Livia. “This song means a lot to me because in the lyrics I tried to embrace all of the things that were selfish about myself. It was meant to be kind of satirical towards myself because I wanted to overcome all of my selfish thoughts and move past them. I spent so many years ignoring or denying the fact that I had played a part in friendships and relationships that had fallen apart. I wanted all of the pain I felt from losing people to just go away. While I was in California, I realized that I really did play a part in those relationships I had lost. I was mad at first and wanted to deny it. With time I realized that I needed to forgive everyone. And that I needed to forgive myself. That’s where close to perfect came from. I was finally accepting who I was and who I was trying to become.”
“Close to Perfect” has a Paramore meets Green Day sound to it and embraces individualism. The overall message is that perfection is not real. No human fits this idealized version of people that we as a society have set upon ourselves. Livia embraces who she is but encourages others to as well. Who we are as people is enough and we should just exist as our authentic selves. “There is a pain and longing in my songs, but also this feeling of a never-ending hope that things will get better,” shares Livia.
