Vancouver native Syd Carter West has released a new single Moonshine and an accompanying emotive music video directed by West herself.
The visual follows West into a studio where she confidently challenges the darkness within, breaking into a midnight glow with indigo lights shining down on her as she embraces the strength that comes with every low blow. The visual is full of clever symbolism using illuminating spheres as representation of the moon and cruel words hanging from clotheslines as she walks by them. Covered with black paint, West is finally able to release herself from oppressing opinions, which is seen towards the end as the paint is graciously blown off her delicate face.
West admits, “The fear of disappointing others, feeling alienating and judged is something I still live with on a daily, so I wanted to write a song that reminds me of what joy, empowerment and unapologetic openness feels like.”
The fluorescent video takes you on a powerful will to regain your inner badass that’s waiting to make a comeback. Just like West, you will finally understand that darkness is needed to radiate light. The darker the night the brighter the moon shines.
