David Ayscue is a Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and recent graduate of the University of Southern California. His songs describe the loves, characters, anxieties and adventures that have colored his journey thus far with a poetic vividness that takes much inspiration from the early works of Bruce Springsteen. Other musical influences include artists like The Avett Brothers, and the Dave Matthews Band.
Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, he was exposed to a multitude of cross-genre music by surfing through the local radio stations on long drives to and from school–everything from classic rock to folk to local Bay Area rap. His musical career developed in high school, where he began playing in open mic nights and student concerts, and in 11th grade he put pen to paper and discovered his newfound love for songwriting.
Ayscue’s debut album Southwood Waltz features eight songs that detail a man at the crossroads of youth and adulthood. ‘New York’ features soothing vocals that sweep across gentle acoustic guitar melodies. Its minimalistic arrangement allows the sincerity of the song to shine through, while his lyrics spruce up the sometimes gritty reality of the city with a dreamlike charm. ‘Back In My Day’ narrates Ayscue’s childhood in Marin County, CA. “It’s about feeling stuck as an adult… looking for something to grasp onto, and thinking back to a time when everything was so vivid and in-the-moment.” The hauntingly beautiful ‘Where We Land’ begins as a stripped down, guitar/vocal pairing, then develops into a Mumford-and-Sons style, 4-on-the-floor anthem with a horn section to boot.
Having garnered both critical acclaim from such publications as Earmilk, David Ayscue is fast becoming a buzzing artist in the Los Angeles music scene. His debut album Southwood Waltz is currently available worldwide.
